Understanding Point Spreads
Fundamentals · BEGINNER
A point spread is how sportsbooks level the playing field between teams of different strengths. It handicaps the favored team to create betting balance.
KEY CONCEPTS:
- The spread represents the point difference the book expects
- Negative spread (-3) = that team is favored by 3 points
- Positive spread (+3) = that team is an underdog by 3 points
- You must win by more than the spread (or lose by less) to win your bet
EXAMPLE:
Lakers -5.5 vs Celtics +5.5
- Lakers need to win by 6+ to cover
- Celtics can lose by 5 or less to cover
- If Lakers win by exactly 5, it's a push (tie)
WHY IT MATTERS:
Sharp bettors look for spreads that don't match their true probability models. A 3-point difference between sportsbook and your analysis = potential edge.
